Love, when nurtured and respected, can withstand the test of time and the challenges of life. It’s a beautiful emotion that cultivates a feeling of joy and passion in your soul. It’s just unfortunate that some relationships burn brightly at first, only to have their flame snuffed out with time. Understanding the reasons why people fall out of love can be the first step towards nurturing a relationship that lasts a lifetime.
I’m a firm believer that prevention is better than cure. If couples can equip themselves with necessary communication skills along with a positive attitude towards serving each other, they have a great chance of remaining in love for as long as they are alive.
Be that as it may, let’s examine all the reasons why people fall out of love so that we can avoid making the same mistakes as others.

Why Do Couples Fall Out Of Love?
1. Lack Of Communication
Communication is at the very center of every healthy relationship.
Couples who take communication skills for granted often clash and misunderstand each other.
Openness, honesty, and a willingness to talk without blame prevent most couples from drifting apart or resenting each other.
With the passage of time, people fall out of love without meaningful conversations that nurture closeness and understanding.
Failing to communicate in a mature, respectful, dignified, and open manner creates too many opportunities to misunderstand each other, drift apart, or clash incessantly.

2. Unmet Expectations
On one hand, unrealistic expectations from each other or from the relationship result in disappointment and resentment.
On the other hand, unmet expectations accentuate feelings of dissatisfaction and unhappiness.
Grappling with failed expectations based on the idealization of a romantic relationship will tarnish a relationship.
In many ways, we can attribute this problem to a lack of communication because couples who can express their needs have a greater likelihood of satisfying each other.

3. Changes In Priorities
There are seasons in life, and sometimes the demands and devastating events of life can pull us away from our romantic relationship.
As we all know, the grass isn’t greener on the other side; it’s greener where you water it.
Not making enough time to connect, communicate, and serve each other can cause couples to drift apart.
Once a sense of detachment occurs and it isn’t addressed, it worsens until people fall out of love altogether.
Couples who fail to make time for each other on a regular basis and who overlook the needs of each other in exchange for other priorities face the biggest risk of drifting apart physically, emotionally, and mentally.
4. Emotional Neglect
After the honeymoon phase, it’s easy for couples to fall into a comfort zone. Within their comfort zone, their effort wanes, and they may contribute too little to the relationship for it to thrive.
As we all know, romantic relationships are sustained by nurturing the emotional needs of each other.
Overlooking these needs, failing to court each other, compromising on the expression of love, and taking each other for granted can be some of the main reasons why people fall out of love.
This happens because it is common for emotional neglect to result in feelings of loneliness and isolation over time.

5. Routine And Monotony
As much as a romantic relationship should offer support, comfort, and companionship, it’s primary features are joy, passion, intimacy, and excitement.
These emotions have to be nurtured to keep the spark alive.
Couples who fall into a predictable routine get bored with each other.
The spark dims, and the need for excitement continues to persist. This can cause feelings of doubt, dissatisfaction, and boredom, which can gradually ruin a relationship.
The novelty of new experiences with each other prevents this from occurring.
As long as couples continue to court each other like they did during the early days of falling in love, they should be able to avoid falling out of love.
6. Unresolved Conflicts
There’s no better way to breed resentment, anger, and bitterness in a relationship than by allowing conflicts to remain unresolved.
Furthermore, a failure to sincerely apologize during misunderstandings or for wrongdoings will have a similar effect.
Not only do these emotions corrode the foundation of love, but they also create barriers to connecting with each other in a vulnerable and passionate state.
These feelings of negativity stemming from conflicts have a way of making people fall out of love over time.
7. Violating Boundaries
Trust is instrumental to a healthy, long-lasting relationship.
Those who violate trust by overstepping boundaries cast a shadow of doubt and disrespect that tarnishes the bond shared between each other.
Once trust is broken, it is almost impossible for partner’s to be completely vulnerable to each other.
Keeping each other at a distance and the fear of betrayal will corrode any closeness the relationship once possessed, leading to the erosion of love.
