ignoring your ex, is it immature to ignore your ex

So, your ex keeps reaching out to you online despite your many attempts at drawing up boundaries. You want to put an end to it but you’re stuck with one question in mind, is it immature to ignore your ex?

No, it is not immature to ignore your ex if you are trying to move on with your life or to accommodate your new relationship.

What’s important is the need for closure. This can take place via communication but when someone refuses to accept reality, your only choice may be to ignore them.

By ignoring your ex, it drives across one simple message – I don’t want to talk to you anymore.

This is an effective way to get your ex to leave you alone but bear in mind, being ignored can be a blow to the ego.

An ex who can’t handle that will keep trying to break you down until they get a reply out of you.

What you don’t want to do is feed into this cycle.

If you decide to ignore your ex, do so committed.

Eventually, when all of their efforts fall on deaf ears, they’ll give up and walk away.

In a way, we can actually view this as closure through tough measures.

It’s not the best means of getting closure for yourself and providing closure for your ex but if it’s your only choice, don’t be afraid to do it.

Why it’s not immature to ignore your ex

The fact that you’re asking this question shows that you’re considerate of others’ feelings and your own behavior.

This, in and of itself, is a sign of maturity. Weighing the pros and cons of a decision is something that requires a strong sense of maturity and consideration.

Take comfort in that.

If you’re worried about hurting your ex’s feelings by ignoring them, it’s the price that has to be paid for moving on.

It may be tough on them but if there’s absolutely no hope for reconciliation, then you’d be doing them a favor by ignoring them.

This will force them to acknowledge the end of the relationship and to move on with their life.

Another reason why it’s not immature to ignore your ex is that you want to focus on your present and the future.

The past is over.

There’s very little we can control in regards to the past. We certainly cannot undo it.

But, we can learn from the past, adapt and become better people. If that means ignoring your ex then so be it.

You have to prioritize your future because it’s important. Even if you’ve made mistakes in the past, now is the time to do what is right.

Let’s say that you’re in a relationship now and your partner does not feel comfortable with you talking to an ex.

Accommodate their needs and stop talking to your ex.

Your current relationship takes precedence over the past. So, the mature thing to do is prioritize your relationship over your ex.

Situations when it is immature to ignore your ex

There are instances when ignoring your ex isn’t actually good or a sign of maturity at all and we need to discuss those.

When you’ve been married and share custody of kids, ignoring your ex is not healthy.

What you should be aiming for is a healthy, cordial and acceptable relationship with your ex to add stability and a sense of ease for your children.

You absolutely must prioritize their needs over selfish and immature behavior.

You’re a parent and that means making certain sacrifices for the well-being of your children.

I’m not advising you to be in constant contact with your ex in this situation.

You can draw up some healthy boundaries but ignoring them will prove futile in the end. In fact, it could even be harmful to your children.

Another instance when ignoring your ex is immature would be if they’re trying to genuinely make amends.

Understandably, people hurt each other. It sucks. But, forgiveness is freeing not just to your ex but to yourself.

You don’t have to open normal communication with your ex. Acknowledge the sentiment and simply move on.

That’s good enough.

In Conclusion

When trying to decide what to do, always prioritize what’s right for you, your children, the future and even your ex.

My advice to you would be as follows – judge each situation on the merits and come to your own conclusion of whether you should ignore your ex or not.

If your reasons and motives are pure, fair and good, then there’s no reason to believe that you’re being immature.

But, it is imperative that you are honest with yourself whilst weighing the pros and cons.
