Getting dumped sucks. You’re left with all these feelings for your ex, especially the desire to win him back. But, you know that in order for this to happen, he needs to feel some degree of regret for leaving. This begs the question, how long does it take for a guy to regret dumping you?

Quite often, it takes a guy between 60 to 120 days to regret dumping you. But, that number can vary depending on a number of circumstances. Specifically, when he has time to be alone or when he realizes that life without you isn’t the same or as good as it once was.

This is usually what happens in most cases.

A guy will dump you and thrive for a few weeks because he made a unilateral and powerful decision to change the terms of your relationship.

Let’s be honest, taking control of a situation like this and calling the shots will make anyone feel powerful.

At first, he will experience some degree of regret dumping you because the hurt he causes is not something he could possibly celebrate.

That, in and of itself, will cause a guy to feel regret.

But, that is overpowered by the drastic change he initiated in his life. With his newfound freedom and ability to explore what he wants for himself, the thrill and excitement will overcome him.

Let me just emphasize that this is temporary.

It’s like an emotional high.

Once it wears off and it absolutely will, he will experience regret for dumping you.

When I look back at times when I ended a relationship, I usually experienced regret about 2 or 3 months afterwards.

And from most of the guys who I coach and have interviewed, they have attested to the same time frame. Some men took longer whereas others slightly shorter.

The average consensus has been between 60 to 120 days.

I would also like to share another interested piece of information that I think would surprise most of you.

Most men will go through two phases of regret for dumping you.

The first phase is soon after the breakup and the second is when his next relationship or serious courtship fails.

So, just because it’s been longer than a few months since you last heard from him doesn’t mean that he completely skipped feeling regret for dumping you.

Chances are such, if he ends up getting rejected or dumped by someone else, he’ll eventually reflect on the past and experience regret for dumping you and letting go of someone who actually wanted to be with him.

Be that as it may, let’s talk about some of the factors that affect how long it takes him to regret dumping you.

1. Unresolved feelings for you

A lot of guys only realize how much they care about someone when they lose that person or walk away from them.

When that excitement of having his so-called ‘freedom’ dissipates, that’s when reality strikes and he’ll start to consider exactly how he feels about you.

Breakups can be a monumental event.

Both partners experience an emotional rollercoaster ride.

What I’ve come to realize is that decisions ought not to be made when you are extremely emotional and confused.

For this reason, when he has time to think about what has happened and all those overwhelming feelings have subsided, that’s when he will truly understand how he feels about you.

And if he has unresolved feelings for you or unfinished business, you can be sure that he will regret breaking up with you.

2. Being alone

When you have someone in your life, you don’t truly comprehend the value of their presence until they’re gone.

Suddenly, you have all this free time on your hands.

Guys romanticize this idea until they experience it.

When they’re faced with being alone, that’s when loneliness strikes and they’re unable to tolerate it.

At that point, it’s only a matter of time before they experience regret for dumping you.

3. Not meeting anyone as good as you

I agree with the sentiment that there’s a lot of great people in the world but that doesn’t mean that the majority of them are good for you.

There’s also no guarantee that you’ll connect with the ones who do take an interest in you and vice versa.

For that reason, I always encourage my readers to cherish those who they have. When you have a good woman or man, treat them well and be appreciative.

Some guys seem intoxicated by the idea that the grass is greener on the other side.

Most of the time, it’s not. And when they get there, that’s when shock and regret hits.

I mean, let’s be honest, how can you not feel regret when you keep struggling to meet someone better than the person you dumped!

Building on the above statement, guys end up feeling disillusioned when they enter the dating scene again only to face a ton of rejection and ghosting.

Rather than fulfill this fantasy they once had before dumping you, they’re now left feeling less than appreciated.

All the rejection stings and the inevitable feeling of regret will wash over them.

5. Separation anxiety

When you lose anyone from your life, even by choice, it hurts and stings. There are feelings that cannot be avoided or evaded altogether.

You’ll find yourself experiencing nostalgia as well as sadness.

Accompanied by those feelings is that of separation anxiety.

No longer having that person in your life at all and having to live with your decision to dump them can cause anxiety. It’s a drastic change and with change comes uncertainty.

The uncertainty of it all coupled with a lack of your presence will cause him to experience separation anxiety just like you have experienced.

At that point, you can bet that he will experience some level of regret for dumping you.
