A true best friend is someone who is kind, loyal, believes in you, and always has your best interests at heart. This begs the question, can your boyfriend be your best friend?

Yes, your boyfriend can be your best friend if you or he wants to be. If he ticks off for all the categories of a best friend, then he probably already is (in a way).

But does this mean that he should be your best friend? Well, that’s the real question that needs to be answered.

As awesome as it may be, there are few concerns regarding this matter.

It may not be such a good idea to be best friends with your boyfriend even though the two of you already share a deep connection.

Reasons Why It Might Not Be A Good Idea:

  1. There may be certain things you won’t be able to share with your boyfriend or find it difficult to discuss a particular situation if it involves him.
  2. Depending too much on someone may lead them to become distant if they feel overwhelmed.
  3. Guys and girls are generally different in many ways and he might not be able to fill that ‘friendship gap’ that you’re looking for.
  4. He may start to feel left out if you meet and start hanging out with new friends
  5. You and he might not get enough ‘alone time’ from each other.
  6. He might not be available all the time to be with you or talk to you when you need to.

This does not mean there aren’t major benefits to your boyfriend being your best friend or that he isn’t already.

In fact, some people love to consider their partners as their best friend.

It really depends on the type of people you are.

Some mesh together really well as friends and partners while for others, it’s either best to stay just as friends or partners.

Let’s take a quick look at a few reasons why having your boyfriend as a best friend is a good thing:

1. There are No Secrets

With a deep and loyal relationship, you know for sure that you can trust this person with literally anything.

The fantastic thing about being friends with your boyfriend is that you know each other’s secrets and there’s no fear in holding back.

You also know that you can share your thoughts and feelings without fear of being judged or misunderstood.

2. He’s The First Person You Turn To

If the first person you turn to when a disaster strikes or when you need to get something off your chest, or even share thrilling news, is with your boyfriend, then this is the person who you consider to be best above all.

You know with certainty you can depend on him for anything and you will do the same.

There is that ingrained understanding that you have each other’s back.

Another major fact about having your partner as your best friend is that you can trust them to advise you with honesty and help you see other perspectives or solutions rather than feeling that he’s criticizing you.

It’s easier to understand each other better when you have experience and knowledge of how to handle a situation.

3. You Have More Time For Each Other

When you’re in a relationship, it’s difficult to juggle various different relationships in your life, and a lot of times, we can’t help but cancel plans you’ve made with a friend or let them down a few times.

This can often lead to bitter feelings with each other.

Due to the differences in schedules and the people we surround ourselves with, some friendships can’t handle the pressure and change.

However, if your boyfriend is your best friend, you definitely won’t encounter this situation.

In fact, you’ll have more time for each other which is quite a sweet deal.

4. You Know Everything About Each Other

Your boyfriend probably knows your strengths, weakness, insecurities, and what drives you nuts. And you probably are aware of his good and bad side too.

That’s what makes it even more satisfying. There’s less chance of a friendship ending from misunderstandings when your partner has already been through thick and thin with you.

Most couples are used to having a disagreement or a fight and it’s much easier to reach an agreement or resolution because you’ve experienced this situation before.

5. You Can See Each Other Being Around For Life

Relationships that have existed for a long time is usually due to the fact that the couple is compatible with each other to a high degree.

You’d often hear these couples describe each other as their best friends.

This is because a relationship that is both filled with love and friendship is destined for success.

You’ll never have to be anxious or worry about the love dying in a few years or when you get old because if you already enjoy everything you do with each other and are comfortable with everything your partner says or does now, it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever get fed up.

Being in a relationship with someone who gives you the freedom to completely be yourself is one that many pray for.

6. You Know Exactly What Each Other Needs

A marvellous thing about having a best friend who is your boyfriend is that they know you so well.

They know how you think, feel, and act and they know exactly what to do to make you feel good again.

Whether that’s a tub of ice cream or a casual sit down, your best friend is armed and ready.

If you’re mad or not in the mood to talk and hang, they know very well to give you your space.

They also know when to support you and when they should persuade you from making wrong decisions.

In Conclusion

If the only friend you have is your boyfriend, then I say you should consider yourself blessed.

There’s just an incredible number of reasons why having your partner there for you in the way a best friend would is amazing.

But this doesn’t present without some challenges as mentioned earlier.

I don’t want to give you the wrong impression that it’s all sunshine, butterflies, and rainbows.

You might find it hard to share your feelings or get a second opinion when you’re fighting with your boyfriend.

This may unnecessarily prolong silly arguments that could have been over and done with if you had spoken to a friend who made you realise what you did wrong or right.

If your boyfriend is the person you usually turn to when you need advice, it might not be an option in this case.

However, this isn’t a such major problem or deal-breaker.

It’s best to focus on the positive aspects of your boyfriend being your best friend and deal with the negative if or when it actually happens.
